Just as we left home, there was a huge downpour of rain. It literally bucketed down. Fortunately, we parked in the adjacent parking building and walked round, under cover most of the way, which helped. There was a shopping trolley nearby, so we loaded it up and wheeled it round to the library - beats carrying heavy books and catering in a downpour.
Despite smaller numbers than expected, many books were sold. It was a fun night for everyone in a lovely setting, overlooking Lake Macquarie. The Hunter Writers Centre director, Brian Joyce, was a great facilitator for the night. He surprised me with his knowledge and understanding of the book. Brian likes the book and quoted several passages, expounding on them. He made me feel that it was a very worthwhile and important piece of work.
Not knowing numbers coming, of course, I over-catered, making a wide assortment of delectable canapés, sandwiches, dips and asparagus rolls. So, the following morning, we had a lovely brekky, of leftover toasted sandwiches and hot canapés.
I’d like to thank all those who supported me and assisted in making the evening the success it was: the Librarians, Brian Joyce, from the Hunter Writers’ Centre, Samantha, Ross and Carol, Ken - who managed the book sales. Thanks to the people who attended and left with some of my books. My appreciation to all of you. Altogether, we enjoyed a great night. Brian Joyce is going to write something for the Hunter Writers Centre newsletter about the evening.
I’ve found listening to a 'swag' of excuses – given by friends for non-attendance – most entertaining. I’m seriously thinking of creating a new collection: ‘The Little Book of Riotous Excuses’.
